Long Island Woman Charged With DWI After Good Samaritans Rescue Her From Burning BMW

A woman was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated after being pulled from a burning BMW that crashed into a utility pole on Long Island, police said.

Saint James resident Melanie Lhommedieu was driving a 2009 BMW southbound on Wheeler Road, at the intersection of Marlo Lane shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 in Happaugue, when the vehicle crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a utility pole.

Police said that after striking the pole, Lhommedieu’s BMW caught fire, prompting two men traveling behind her to jump into action, pulling her from the fiery vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation into the crash determined that Lhommedieu was allegedly under the influence. She was arrested and charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and cited for multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

Lhommedieu was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, July 30.
